Vox showing notifications despite being disabled in Preferences

#1

Hi,

Since installing (I believe) v2.7.3, I find that Vox has started spamming me with notifications about taking a break or trying out Loop or Radio. I am running El Capitan 10.11.3.

I have the setting Preferences->Appearance->Notifications set to Disabled and that should be that; ignoring that setting is Facebook 'privacy' settings behaviour.

Is this a bug or feature? If the latter I will be uninstalling Vox immediately.

I have read the advice in another forum topic suggesting that I should connect Vox to my Soundcloud account and then disable getting new track notifications, but I am not keen to connect Vox to other services and think it is poor design that I should have to do so just to switch off notifications.

Please let me know whether you intend to fix/revert this behaviour in a subsequent release.

Thanks,

Ian

Hi iansilvester,
Sorry for inconvenience.
Notifications will appear infrequently but if you want to do something anyway - try to login with SoundCloud account and uncheck the checkbox shown on screenshot.
This must work for you.

See screenshot attached.

Thanks for the rapid response and the tip; I will change that setting.

I would still like to know though - is this designed behaviour? Is it your actual intention that it should be impossible to entirely disable notifications from Vox? Or is this a bug that you plan to correct in a subsequent release?

Thanks,

Ian

iansilvester,
This is designed behaviour. As i sad notifications appear very infrequently.
Thanks for using our app! Have a nice day!

Well, this is unacceptable behavior. I uninstalled Vox using Appcleaner, I never had a SoundCloud account, I'm not going to be using Vox, no big deal, not my cuppa tea. I don't think I should have remnants of this taking over my computer. Now how do I get rid of these?

#6

Thanks for the complete explanation.

I would suggest then that if it is not possible to entirely disable notifications then the Preferences should in some way make that clear, else it just looks like a bug.

iansilvester,
How many times have you seen the notification?
You can completely remove VOX with apps, like App Cleaner.
Thanks for feedback.

Hi,

Since disabling notifications I have seen three different notifications once each, one promoting Radio, another promoting Loop, and the most recent telling me to take a break and listen to some music (!).

I can't login to an account I don't have. I'm unable to remove Vox notifications too because, like others, I lack a Soundcloud account (verified no account with Soundcloud).

What recourse does one have to stop notifications without creating a Soundcloud account?

#10

Can you tell in which time interval have you seen notifications? it was in one day?

#11

No, as far as I remember it was something like this:

  • installed 2.7.3, got a 'try Radio' notification later that day
  • disabled notifications in the preferences
  • used Vox a few days later, got the 'try Loop' notification
  • used Vox a few days later and left it running (but not playing).
  • a couple of days later, when returning to my machine when it was asleep, I woke it and on the lock screen it told me to 'take a break'
  • I raised my support ticket in frustration.

I can understand you need to promote the features that are income streams for you, but the 'take a break' notification is just plain offensive.

Finally, if you are needing to monetize, I would strongly suggest you offer a cheap, paid option to truly disable all notifications. I would gladly pay a small price for good software that does not poke me.

Thank you for suggestion!
We will consider it, be sure.
I wish somebody to tell me 'take a break' sometimes :)
Have a nice day!

Please don't smile. There's nothing amusing about this; With no in-app option to disable this "feature" this is unequivocally spam.

I am throwing in my feedback as well that this is an annoyance. I have uninstalled VOX with prejudice because of these notifications. I will reinstall when I read in a changelog that this spam has been removed.

Thank you.

#14

I second what kdan says. I do not need a music player to tell me when to take a break!

:o(

#15

Same here. Removed Vox because of the annoying notifications. Don't see the sense of getting a "take a break, listen to some music" notification, especially right after starting up my computer?

#16

I really like the app and appreciate all the hard work, but I'd like to cast another vote against these "take a break" notifications. They're very intrusive.

#17

I second kdan and ian completely.
I was just giving a presentation and was NOT AMUSED about a "take a break" notification popping up all of a sudden in front of the audience - and the vox-app was not even running! It was not open for days.
This is unacceptable and unprofessional. It makes it impossible to use your computer for serious professional purposes.
Let the user choose to pay you some money instead of intruding him in such unprofessional ways!

Discussion was assigned to VOX Developers

I also disabled the notifications thinking that finally.., the bloody "take a break" notification would go away..

Just opened my computer again, boom there! take a break..

I always recommend this software to all my friends that still use itunes, but please, please, remove this "feature" it is annoying people more than actually helping..

Very unprofessional indeed.

I'm close to uninstalling VOX because of this retarded "feature". I'm not using Soundcloud and can't turn off this checkbox.
Do hope this nonsense will be fixed in next version.

It doesn't really matters how frequent those notifications are. They are super annoying.
