Can't hear anything

#1

Hello folks,

I haven't used Vox for a while. When I opened it today it will not play anything! The red progress bar is moving as it would play the file, but the left time is not changing and I can't hear anything. I have tried all three outputs I have (Same as System, Internal Speakers, DLNA Renderer). I'm running on Mac OS 10.10.5 and already tried to solve it by reinstalling the App. Does anyone has an idea why it's not working?

Regards

Jens,

Which version You are on?
Please make sure that in System prefs->Audio->Output the built - in device is chosen, then select Same as system in Vox, try to play some known to be good audio file.

If problem persists, quit Vox (cmd+Q) then Find some audio file in Finder and double click on it (here I suppose the audio types are registered to Vox). Try to start it this way and tell me if it's working or not.

Some more tips to try:
Goto Vox-> Preferences->General, disable "Fade Out on Pause/Skip"
Goto Vox-> Preferences->Audio, disable "Sync sample rate", "Exclusive access"
Goto Vox-> Preferences->Audio->Advanced, disable "Try to load tracks fully into memory"

Hi,

I'm on 2.6.5 Built 2650.7. System settings are as you said. I tried everything you mentioned, still no sound. Everything else works fine (VLC, iTunes, Quicktime, Songbird, ...). Volume is at 100%.

#4

Thank You for reply
Have You tried to start Vox from Finder by clicking an audio file?

#5

Please disregard my message about starting from Finder

Further steps assume You don't mind installing Vox from other place than AppStore. Don't do this if You have Radio feature purchased.

  • delete Vox, clear Trash
  • Download and check this latest beta version:

https://rink.hockeyapp.net/apps/ad4ee591ca27a09ad4033a3c0c041892

I am very curious if it solves this problem.
Thank You for patience.

Yes I tried by opening Vox from Finder. I have Vox installed from AppStore and also tried to delete it with AppCleaner and reinstall via AppStore. And there is also no sound using the beta version. Totally weird :-/

Version 2.6.5 sometimes asked me to get access to some folders. I tried to grant access to my music folder but the button was always disabled so I could only abort. Might that be a clue? That popup doesn't appear anymore. Duration and album covers are displayed correctly, so reading permissions shouldn't be the problem.

#7

Do You know now to get a Console log?
Could You record and send us a log of Vox starting and trying to play some tracks?

#8

The log is attached. It was made by opening Vox 2.6.5 from Finder.

#9

Jens, thank You for diagnostic data.

This line tells me Vox is unable to open Your library files because of Sandbox:

"Error retrieving bookmark data for iTunes track file:///Volumes/Gemeinsamer%20Ordner/Musik/Jens/iTunes%20Media/Musi...;

That might be the cause, or might not.
Could You please put some well-known mp3 into Your Home/Music folder and try to play it from there?

#10

Hi,

I have no idea why it comes up with this one track. The whole time I'm trying to play tracks from my home/music folder! That song from the log-file is a file thats in my itunes library but I'm not trying to play it with Vox. Is there a way to somehow "disconnect" Vox from iTunes?

I just tried to reload the complete iTunes library but that also had no effect.

I just found another odd behaviour: When under Playlist/Collections I open an iTunes collection and double click one track it will be added 20 times to the queue?!

Are there any more system options that can totally mute Vox?

#11

Can You play a radio station (ibiza, for example)?

#12

No

#13

Hi soundguy!

Hope you had a nice christmas time! Do you have any more ideas what I could try to make Vox playing music?

#14

Jens,

it takes time, because I am unable to reproduce the problem... Whatever we do there's no way to make Vox this mute... Only thing I can suggest currently is download this debug build that has extensive log feature and repeat Console log procedure:

1) Uninstall existing Vox
2) clean trash
3) unpack this debug archive to a folder on Your mac
4) start Console, click "clear display"
5) start Vox, wait 4-5 seconds, try to play some tracks - try several times.
6) quit Vox (cmd+Q)
7) Send me everything in console

here is the debug beta:

#15

Ok, I did as you said. There are now two log files. First one was made
by opening Vox and then starting to play some music. The second one was
made by opening Vox from Finder.

Discussion was merged with "re-cant-hear-anything-problems-3200".

#17

Ok,

Here is another version for You to test:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4070512/VOX_Debug.zip

Please could You kindly repeat the "Console" procedure again (just once, no need to do it from Finder), but please don't forget to try to start several tracks before finishing the log.

Thank You for efforts

#18

Here you are

#19

Jens, according to this extended log, this version should play into Your built-in audio card. Please start Vox and start the same audio file ("08 Pursuit of Happiness.mp3") and make sure the playback position time changes on timer

I still can't hear anything. As I said already the progressbar (the tiny orange line) is moving correctly, but the time value does not change. If i click somewhere on the progressbar to jump to any point of the song, the time value will be updated to that specific time but will also not change anymore. I believe there's something wrong with my system but I have no hint what could be wrong. Every other App plays sounds correctly.
