Media Keys sandboxing

VOX says it can't use media keys because sandboxing. Yet, Spotify can use the media keys without installing a preference pane. What's the difference between VOX as a 3rd party app vs Spotify as a 3rd party app?

I figured it out: It's because your app is release on the Mac App Store which enforces sandboxing, thus you need the preference pane to use the media keys. Where as Spotify is not on the App Store so has no such restriction, I'm imagining.
