Can't start vox by clicking on mp3 file. Also, autoupdate doesn't work

#1

Two problems.
I'm on mac OS 10.9.5.
Vox 2.6.4.
When Vox is not running and i click a mp3-file to play it nothing happens. Finder does it visual splash effect to indicate i opened the file, but Vox does not start. However if i start Vox manually then click the song , it starts to play as it's supposed to.

Then too the autoupdate problem. I get the pop up saying there's a new version, changelog and so on. I click download and then quit & install, then nothing happens. Sometimes it asks for my admin account, but mostly it doesn't. (oh yeah, should have mentioned i'm on a less priviliged user account for dayly work and have the separate admin account for messing with the system, like installing Vox and other apps.). Then when i remember that i was about to listen to some music i start up vox manually again (remember, can't click the audio files...) and it starts OK, but with the same old version as before. Update manually by removing vox and download the new version from their site works, but is... manual.

I've had these problems since last summer at least.

Any tips on fixing these problems?
Thanks.

Lunk,

It's problem with partial update routine that works less than perfect on 10.9.
One possibility is to uninstall the app and download new DMG and install it.
Other is to update Your OS.

Feel free to get back with any further questions!

Lunk, regarding starting from finder - have You tried recent Vox version - 2.7.1 from our website?

#4

Thank you for your response. The 2.7.1 update fixed the start from finder problem. This is important for me because i use Vox as a replacement for Winamp. (light weight, click and play some songs). So thanks for that! Hope you will get the auto update looked at soon as well.

While we're at it, would you please take a look at why old versions of Vox shows up in the 'Open with' menu? I'm not sure if they really still exists since i can't start Vox from finder in older versions because of our little bug. At least Mac's paranoid 3rd party security warning shows up when i click one of them.

Did you get the screenshot? Here it is again. I think it dissapears when i mess up the captcha check. Which by the way is nuts...

#6

lets try again...

If those versions are not physically available in Your system, looks like Your OS does something wrong during updates/installations of Vox. I will try to figure this out, but I haven't seen this before on Mavericks...

Hey lunk,
sorry to have kept you waiting.
You can try to put this command into Terminal (all between braces):

"/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user"

this should solve your problem.
Write us how it goes!

Thanks for replying VOX!

I had to double check  with the internets what the command was going to do. It looks like something i found earlier but didn't end up doing. I did the command now. The "Open with" context menu is much nicer and cleaner now. No more Vox family tree! Vox opens alot faster now too!
For the people out there lacking  google-fu or a basic unix-beard, i think they'd appreciate if you explained a bit what those long terminal commands are going to do to their system.  Like, "Hey, this might work for you: sudo rm -rf / " and then "Great lets try this.  ... Wait, why... NOOOO! MOM!"

Now how is the update bug coming along for us maverics folks?

Best regards,
Oscar Lundqvist
