Apple Remote Option Greyed out

#1

I downloaded the extensions, but the one thing I really wanted, a remote for my music library based in the next room, was greyed out. Has this option been disabled temporarily, permanently or is it a glitch with my system?

Hi Peter,
Thanks for using VOX!
Can You please give more details? Sorry, but I'm not sure that I fully understand what You are trying to do...
Looking forward for Your answer!

Firstly,

Thank you for your quick response.

I have only been using VOX for a few days since I got the invitation to trial it from ProStudio Masters. Up untiI now, I have been using both Amara and Fidelia. Both sound great but have some serious stability issues. So far, I've found VOX to be a better alternative in many ways and hope that I can continue to use it as my default player.

Here’s my situation. I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro with a 500gb SSD and 16gb of RAM with an intel i7 processor that I use exclusively as a music server. It plays through a NAD M51 DAC into a Classe Twenty Five amp and B&W 802 speakers.

My entire system, apart from the TV screen and the speakers (which are in the living room) is in the spare room behind the living room. In order to change a track in VOX, I have to physically go into the spare room and change the track on the MacBook screen.

Fidelia, on the other hand, offers an app for the iPhone that (much like Apple’s “Remote”) works through my wifi network and allows me to change tracks and search my entire library and more from the comfort of my couch in the living room. I wish to replicate this convenient feature using VOX.

To that end, I was thrilled to see that one could download a number of “extensions” for VOX, one of which promised to pair mmy Apple TV remote to VOX and potentially allow me to control VOX on my MacBook in the next roomfrom my couch in the living room.

Sadly, when I downloaded the Extensions installer, it would not allow me to check the box next to “use remote controls” even though I could check the other two options. See below.

Could you please advise whether I can get that checkbox to work or whether you have an alternative solution to remotely control the VOX app and the music playlist?

Kind regards,

Peter Saxon

Peter,
I'm impressed. You have deathly audio system!
Unfortunately You missed one important fact. MacBook Pro late 2013 have NOT infrared port, required for Apple remote. I think there must be an usb infrared adapters for that. You can try search in web.
If You have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Regards.

Thanks for that,

Yes, it is quite an adequate audio system, for now.

There are, as you suggest, solutions for Macs without infrared ports available on the net. http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/70500/macbook-ir-adaptor http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/70500/macbook-ir-adaptor

So, assuming I procure one of these solutions, I am still unable to access the VOX ‘extensions' software which enables my Apple TV remote to drive the VOX player.

Do you have a solution for this?

Also, does VOX have any plans to develop an iOS app that cam control the VOX player via wifi? This would be the most elegant solution. I’d be happy to pay for it and I’m sure others would too.

Regards,

Peter Saxon

Hey Peter,
I had a conversation with team and apparently we can't give You any advice in this case. It works fine with native infrared adapters but we haven't tested with third party external adapters, so we can't guarantee that it will work... Maybe You can borrow it from someone for tests? Or take You MacBook to shop and test there before purchasing...
RE:" Also, does VOX have any plans to develop an iOS app that cam control the VOX player via wifi? "
Yes, we are considering, but it's not on our roadmap currently. You can use "Rowmote" app from AppStore. It has great features and it works with VOX. There are a lot of them. It might be a solution for You.

The Apple Remote option has been continually grayed out this is not an issue of infrared capability in the Late Mac Mini 2012 hardware. I cam currently using the Apple Remote on this computer with Audirvana Plus - all versions and ROON.

There is something wrong with the VOX software and its related preference pane.

Wow!

I’m impressed that you are still working on this ticket since April. Thank you.

When you say, "There is something wrong with the VOX preference pane” do you mean on my computer or VOX in general?

In any case, Rowmote and Remote Pro can mirror my MacPro music server’s screen on my 55” TV and can emulate the mouse and keyboard. Although the mouse movements are a little clunky, they provide a reasonable solution to my problem.

Thanks again for your help.

Apple remote option still greyed out... why?
I have mac with IR receiver, have apple remote (hardware), works fine with other apps, not with Vox. Deal barker for me... can you fix this?

Hi there!

While the extension is still under construction, let's see how it could be done the other way.

Little instruction that could be useful:

1 ARC (Apple Remote Control) to be unpaired from the system.
2 Restart the system
3 Install the 3rd party Apple Remote Driver, such as Candleair Apple Remote Driver (checked and confirmed by user)
4 Restart the system
5 Enable Apple Remote Driver (example. Candleair) in System Preferences
6 Pair ARC with the driver (example. Candleair)
7 Launch VOX and check remote control options.
