Can't get Carplay to start playing

I was so thrilled when I found VOX as the only alternative media player with Carplay support. Most other Carplay media apps seem to be Podcast players, I was looking for a player to play my local files on my iPhone and stream it to Carplay.

So VOX looked like the perfect candidate.

However the Carplay implementation is puzzling to say the least (screen shot below).

Problem #1 Even when I play the Play button on the iPhone, nothing seems to happen on Carplay, no sound comes from the car stereo system.

Problem #2 I am looking for the Play button on my Carplay screen and can’t find any. How do you start playing in Carplay??

I am on iOS 12.1.2

Are you browsing your library using dashboard or iOS device? What happens when you start playback?
